2S vs 3S: what is the difference and what suits me?

With LiPo batteries, you often see designations like 2S or 3S. The “S” stands for Series and indicates how many cells the battery contains in series. Each cell has a nominal voltage of 3.7 volts. The number of cells therefore directly determines the total voltage and, consequently, the performance.

What is the difference?

  • 2S LiPo – 2 cells in series, total approx. 7.4 V (8.4 V when fully charged).
✔ Less powerful, safer, and ideal for beginners.
✔ Widely used in 1/10 brushed models and entry-level brushless cars.
  • 3S LiPo – 3 cells in series, total approx. 11.1 V (12.6 V when fully charged).
✔ More power, higher speed, and greater load on the motor/ESC.
✔ Suitable for experienced drivers and models designed for this purpose.

Important concerns

  • Not every model can handle both voltages - always check ESC and motor specifications.
  • A car intended for 2S may break down when using 3S.
  • More voltage = more heat. Keep an eye on the temperature of motor and regulator.

What suits you?

  • Beginners / recreational riding – go with 2S.
✔ Enough speed, gentler on electronics, and longer lifespan.
  • Experienced drivers / speed and power – go for 3S, provided your model supports it.
✔ Ideal for bashing, jumps, and higher top speeds.

Conclusion

The difference lies in the number of cells and the voltage: 2S = 7.4 V and 3S = 11.1 V. For beginners, 2S is the best choice. For those looking for more speed and power, 3S is the solution— provided the car and electronics are compatible.
