Why did I lose my flex shaft on my RC boat?

The flex shaft of an RC boat is an important part of the propulsion system. This flexible shaft connects the motor to the propeller. There are several possible reasons why a flex shaft might be lost or come loose, often related to installation or maintenance.

Possible causes

  • Not secured properly
The flex shaft is secured in the coupling sleeve with a clamp or set screw. If it isn’t tightened securely enough or is installed without a locking device, the shaft can come loose while sailing and slide out of the back of the boat.
  • No threadlocker or too little threadlocker used
The screws that secure the flexible shaft often need to be secured with a threadlocker (such as Loctite). Without threadlocker, the screw can come loose due to vibrations.
  • Wear and tear on parts
Over time, the clamp and the end of the shaft can wear out. This causes the flexible shaft to fit less securely and makes it easier for it to come loose.
  • Insufficient lubrication
A flex shaft must be lubricated regularly. If this isn’t done, friction can occur, causing the shaft to bend or come loose.
  • Too much load
Under heavy load or if the propeller is too large for the setup, extra stress can be placed on the flex shaft. This increases the chance that the shaft will come loose. It’s also possible that the propeller became stuck in the water, causing the flex shaft to break.

How can you prevent this?

  • Before sailing, always check that the flex shaft is secure.
  • Use a drop of locking compound on the mounting screws.
  • Lubricate the flex shaft regularly with special grease for flex shafts.
  • Check periodically for wear and tear and replace parts promptly.
  • Make sure your setup is balanced (motor, ESC, propeller) to avoid overloading.

Conclusion

Losing a flex shaft is usually due to installation, maintenance, or wear and tear. By installing your flex shaft properly, lubricating it regularly, and securing it with lockout compound, you can significantly reduce the chance of this happening again.
