What is a LiPo charger?

Almost all electro RC models are equipped with a NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydrid) battery or a LiPo (Lithium Polymer) battery. Although NiMH batteries are still widely used, we see that more and more RC models nowadays are equipped with LiPo batteries. This is not surprising, as they have a more stable and constant power output than NiMH batteries. In addition, LiPo batteries are much lighter in weight than NiMH batteries, making them ideal for RC airplanes and RC helicopters.

This is why you always need a special LiPo charger for a LiPo battery; these chargers ensure that the "power supply" is automatically stopped as soon as the battery reaches its maximum voltage. Failure to do so will eventually result in overcharging. The battery can then become hot, swell and, in extreme cases, even explode. In short, never just connect your LiPo battery to any charger but first check if it is a LiPo charger!
Also good to know is that each LiPo battery has a so-called S-value, which indicates how many cells the battery contains. A 3S battery has 3 cells, a 4S battery has 4 cells, and so on. It is important for safety and battery life that all cells in a LiPo battery remain balanced. Therefore, a LiPo charger with integrated balancing function is definitely preferable. However, you can also purchase a separate balancer for your LiPo battery charger.
